Local Hunger: System, Snafus, and (Possible) Solutions

This panel discussion will address local food distribution systems, identifying challenges and gaps in the current network, and offering approaches to overcoming existing barriers in comprehensive distribution.  Participants will walk away with a deeper understanding of hunger in North Carolina, barriers to alleviating it, and what individuals can do to work for a system which best meets the needs of food-insecure North Carolinians.

This distinguished panel will include:

Jill Staton Bullard

Jill BullardJill Staton Bullard is the founding Executive Director of the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, a nationally recognized food rescue organization serving the central North Carolina.

Jill co-founded the Food Shuttle with her friend Maxine Solomon in 1989 and was the first active volunteer. The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle's first operations were out of Jill’s house, with freezers filling the garage and paperwork filling the dining room table. She has overseen its growth from a small grass roots movement to a driving force in the fight against hunger, currently employing a fleet of 11 refrigerated trucks, a staff of 32, and a workforce of 7500+ regular volunteers who offered 30,000 volunteer hours last year.

The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle has been a non-traditional food bank of America’s Second Harvest since 1999. Over 4400 people each day have some part of their food needs met by the food recovered, prepared and delivered by the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle.

Jill’s work has been featured in national textbooks, magazine articles and books on the anti-hunger movement. She was ordained in the Episcopal Church in June of 2008.  She has always believed that hunger is unacceptable when we have the ability to provide food to all.

Steven M. Waldmann

Steven “Mike” Waldmann is the Executive Director for the Society of St. Andrew, a national non-profit hunger organization.  Having served more than 20 years in the U.S. Coast Guard, Mr. Waldmann began as a volunteer for the Society of St. Andrew and helped to create their Gleaning Network in Tidewater, VA.  In 1990, he was selected “Military Citizen of the Year” for south Hampton Roads, VA.

In July of 1994 he retired from the Coast Guard and accepted the position as Director of the Society of St. Andrew’s first regional office, in Durham, North Carolina.   His efforts in NC resulted in a program growth of more than 800% in just two years.  In 1997, Mr. Waldmann too up work in the national office of Society of St. Andrew and assumed new responsibilities as Chief of Operations.  In May of 2008 Mike was promoted to Executive Director of the Society of St. Andrew, succeeding its founder, Kenneth C. Horne, Jr.  Under his watch, the Society of St. Andrew has demonstrated considerable program growth while reducing overhead and administration costs, resulting in more food being distributed to our nation’s hungry at less cost per pound.

Each year the Society of St. Andrew saves and distributes about 30 million pound of fresh produce to thousands of feeding programs across the country at an overall program cost of about two cents per serving.

Liz Reasoner

Liz ReasonerLiz Reasoner is the President of the North Carolina Association of “Feeding America” Food Banks and Executive Director of the Food Bank of Albemarle located in Elizabeth City, NC.

In these capacities, she provides leadership and direction on the acquisition and distribution of nutritious food to hungry people through nonprofit and faith-based partners throughout North Carolina.  She is also proud member of the Elizabeth City Morning Rotary Club.

Under her leadership, the Food Bank of Albermarle has provided over 3,000,000 pounds of food annually to those in need throughout eastern North Carolina.
